Which printed goods will your business need?

April 30th, 2015

Small business owners sometimes are surprised by start-up costs. There are legal fees if you want to incorporate, government fees like seller’s permits if you want to sell products, website development costs, office supplies, and last but not least, printed materials. Altogether, such start-up costs could be in the thousands of dollars. Starting a small business is therefore not for the faint of heart.

In this article, I’ll talk a little about what printed materials you will need.

1. Business Cards
This is the first and most obvious need your business will have. While the world has gone digital, business cards still remain in wide use, and it would be a mistake for you not to have plenty on hand. One key thing to remember: put your website URL and email on your business card. Sometimes, I see business cards that omit this information, but there is no excuse for not listing this information on your card.

2. Brochures or Flyers
You should also have at least one printed piece that describes what your business does in some detail. I like brochures the most, as they seem to have the greatest impact. The downside is that brochures can be a bit pricey. For this reason, I recommend ordering brochures online from places like Overnight Prints. If you use an Overnight Prints promo code, you can get a good deal and save some money while still getting top-notch brochures that are professionally printed. If you are on a tight budget, you may opt to use flyers or handouts instead of brochures. For more information about getting coupons for printing, make sure you go to

Some people think brochures and flyers are no longer necessary if you have a website. But I personally would not count on your potential customers taking the trouble to go to a computer or mobile device to look up your business. If you leave a brochure with them, it will stay lying around somewhere and it’s likely they will take a second look at it at some point.
